Elon Musk has claimed to be working on TruthGPT, a “maximum truth seeking AI“. TruthGPT is seen as an alternative to ChatGPT.
Elon Musk plans to launch TruthGPT, claiming that an AI that cares and understands the universe is unlikely to destroy humanity. . Musk‘s plans and aspirations for creating the new maximum truth seeking AI was revealed in an interview with Fox News’s Tucker Carlson. He claimed that an alternative approach to AI creation was needed to avoid the destruction of humanity, an increasingly real risk given the predominance given to AI in recent times.
To elaborate his point, Musk created a comparison between AI’s supposed lack of desire to destroy humanity and the human desire to protect chimpanzees. Though humanity could decide to hunt down chimpanzees and kill them, “we’re actually glad that they exist and we aspire to protect their habitats”, Musk explains.
TruthGPT was framed as a course correction to Open AI, a non-profit which he had helped found. Since then, Open AI has begun operating a for-profit subsidiary. Its profit incentives could potentially interfere with the ethics of the AI models that it creates, according to Musk. This further positions TruthGPT as the more transparent and safer option, this giving more incentive for Musk to launch TruthGPT.
But, this isn’t the first time that Elon Musk has breached the topic of launching TruthGPT. A tweet by Musk read that “what we need is TruthGPT“. He also called attention to the risks of large-scale AI models, like the ones made by Open AI. Musk and several other AI researchers signed an open letter in March that urged companies to put a temporary stop tl “giant AI experiments” that were potentially unpredictable and uncontrollable.
To conclude, it must be noted that it is unsure how far along Elon Musk’sTruthGPT is or even whether it actually exists as of now. But he seems serious about this project especially since he brought it up during his interview with Carlson.
