Good news for IPL fans as Jio Cinema might stream IPL for free.
The Indian Premier League (IPL) will be starting its 16th season from March 20th 2023. Fans are excited for the 75 day match which will be ending on 28th May 2023. But there’s bigger and better news for them as Viacom18, the digital rights owner of IPL 2023, is reportedly airing all 74 matches for free on the Jio Cinema app.
At the moment Viacom18 holds the digital streaming rights of IPL 2023. Last year the company purchased the media rights for all the seasons of IPL from 2023 to 2027 for a staggering deal of Rs.23,758 crore.
However, as per some reports, Viacom18 is planning to air all 74 matches of IPL 2023 for free. This is further solidified after the huge success Viacom18 experienced after their recent strategy of live-streaming FIFA World Cup 2022. This means their biggest rival yet, Disney+Hotstar, who held 50 percent of the market shares due to the enormous viewership they garnered from IPL fans, might just have to watch their back. Because with Viacom18’s latest strategy not only it will gain new viewers but also the Indian OTT segment, Disney +Hotstar, might lose a considerable amount of viewership.Â
Jio Cinema is providing a number of tools for IPL fans to elevate their viewing experience including new technological developments such as 4k streaming, clarity and detail with a resolution that is 4 times more than that of HD. This would be a mind blowing experience for them as the usual broadcasting quality on TV is SD (Standard Definition) which is 480p. This ensures a clarity that is increased tenfold than usual.
Since Jio Cinema is also targeting a broader audience, overcoming language barriers is crucial. Therefore the match will be available in 12 different languages including English, Tamil, Hindi, Malayalam, Telugu, Gujarati, Marathi, Kannada, Bhojpuri, Odia.Â
