Realme exits Indian Television Market Amidst Intense Pressure

Chinese tech company Realme has announced its exit from the Indian television market, citing intense pressure faced by Chinese businesses. While this decision might come as a surprise, Realme remains committed to its smartphone operations in India, focusing on its core strengths. This development coincides with a period of remarkable growth in the Indian television market, driven by factors such as the cricket World Cup and festive sales.

Realme’s decision to withdraw from the Indian television market reflects the challenging environment faced by Chinese companies in India. Intense competition and shifting market dynamics have compelled Realme to reevaluate its product offerings. The company’s priority is now on strengthening its smartphone business and related accessories, ensuring they can continue to meet the needs of Indian consumers.

The Indian television market has witnessed substantial growth in recent years, driven by various factors. Realme had previously invested in building sales channels and brand recognition in this sector, capitalising on the growing demand for smart TVs. Streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney Hotstar further fueled this demand.

Well-established brands like LG, Samsung, Sony, Panasonic, along with newer entrants like Xiaomi and TCL from China, have coexisted in the Indian market. Domestic brands such as Vu and Thomson have also made notable strides. This dynamic landscape adds to the competitive challenges faced by companies like Realme.

Realme’s exit from the television market comes at a time of significant growth in TV sales in India. The ongoing cricket World Cup and the festive season have contributed to this surge.

Data from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Quarterly Smart Home Devices Tracker reveals that India shipped 4.5 million TVs in the first half of 2023, representing an 8% year-over-year growth. IDC attributes this growth to frequent sales events, new product launches, and inventory clearance by vendors ahead of the festive season. Online sales have played a crucial role, accounting for 39% of TV sales in H1 2023, a 25% increase year-over-year.

Realme’s exit from the Indian television market is a strategic move to adapt to the evolving dynamics of the Indian electronics industry and the competitive challenges faced by Chinese companies. Their commitment to smartphone operations ensures they remain a significant player in the Indian tech market.
The television market in India continues to thrive, driven by major events like the cricket World Cup and festive sales, setting the stage for further growth and innovation in the industry. Stay tuned for more tech-related updates
