Meta Launches New VR Subscription for $7.99/month

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, has launched a new VR subscription for $7.99 per month

This new Meta virtual reality subscription service is a campaign to make that part of its business more  profitable. According to Meta on its VR subscription services, “Meta Quest+  combines affordability with the convenience of a curated experience”.

Meta states that users who pay $7.99 per month for VR services will get access to two new games a month. This new subscription feature will be offered with an introductory discount as Meta users who sign up now through July 31 need only pay $1 for the first month.

The first games being offered in Meta Quest+  are FPS Pistol Whip, an action-rhythm game, and the arcade adventure game Pixel Ripped 1995. Walkabout Mini Golf and Mothergunship: Forge will be available for paying users in August.

Meta’s new VR subscription services will give the company an upper hand from its tech rivals.PlayStation notably doesn’t offer VR games in its Playstation Plus subscription.

On Monday, the company announced that the Meta Quest+ service is compatible with its Quest 2, Quest Pro and upcoming Quest 3 headsets. The Meta Quest+ service is available for $7.99 per month or $59.99 per annum.

Meta chief executive officer, Mark Zuckerberg, first unveiled his plans to build a “metaverse” in 2021. A metaverse is a virtual world where people can play games, work and interact in a virtual environment, with the aid of VR headsets.

Mark Zuckerberg has stated that he wishes to transform Meta into a metaverse company. He hopes to “anchor [Meta’s] work and our identity on what we’re building towards”.

In February of 2022, Meta unveiled several ambitious AI projects. Artificial intelligence has been described by Mr. Zuckerberg to be the key to unlocking the metaverse and thus there seems to be emphasis on advancements in AI technology.

Though Meta has reported a profit of $5.7bn in the first three months of the year, greatly surpassing market expectations, Meta’s Reality Labs division reportedly expérienced a loss of $4bn in that period. Thus Meta’s monthly VR subscription services of $7.99 is an attempt at recovering the huge loss.

Earlier this month, Apple unveiled its highly anticipated Vision Pro mixed-reality headset. It comes with a whopping price tag of $3499, which is considerably more expensive than other mixed-reality headsets currently available in the market. Meta’s virtual reality headsets have a price tag ranging from $299.99 to $999.99.
In conclusion, Meta’s new VR subscription services for $7.99 a month will allow users to get the curated virtual reality experience for an affordable price.
