The Android default assistant now supports ChatGPT voice. OpenAI's new action is intensifying the competition among AI assistants. It is now possible to set ChatGPT's intelligent voice as the default assistant instead of Google's Gemini in the most recent beta version of ChatGPT for Android. Many customers prefer ChatGPT's voice experience over others because they feel it is more human-like and realistic, making it a fantastic addition to the Android ecosystem.

ChatGPT VS Gemini

The Assistant Showdown Although Gemini has been gradually replacing Google Assistant (Google is discontinuing the latter), ChatGPT is stepping in. Since its launch, ChatGPT's voice capabilities have astounded users, providing an experience that is surprisingly similar to speaking to a living being. Gemini Live also has similar features, but users feel that it falls short of OpenAI's delivery in terms of conversational flow and response.

Want to make ChatGPT your default voice assistant instead of Gemini?

Here’s how you can do it: Join the ChatGPT beta program by visiting the beta sign-up link and clicking “Become a tester."  a few minutes until the update appears on Google Play, then upgrade the app. Open ChatGPT version 1.2025.070 after updating it and then click on your avatar in the bottom right. Proceed to “Voice” settings and enable the “Background conversations” setting Go back to the chat window and click on the wave icon in the text box. Let the voice load in full Press and hold the power button to open up the assistant selector and choose ChatGPT

Go to Android settings and locate "Default Apps."

Look for "Assistance and Voice Input" settings. Choose ChatGPT as your online assistant. If the assistant selector does not show up automatically, try uninstalling and reinstalling the app, followed by the same procedures.

The User Experience and Limitations

After you've configured ChatGPT as your go-to assistant, you can launch it by holding down the power button. You can communicate, ask inquiries, or obtain information. Everything is saved for subsequent use in your ChatGPT chat history. The fact that ChatGPT takes longer to launch than Gemini or even Perplexity's helper is a significant drawback. Users think the experience is worth the wait, though.

The development of AI assistants for Android has advanced significantly on this new integration, giving customers more options for how they can voice-interact with their devices.
