To regroup again within India’s increasingly competitive market in telecom services, Vodafone Idea (Vi) has just unveiled its plans for 5G services, initially in 75 cities.
Over the last several years, telecom operator Vi was facing an extreme challenge posed by its strong rival competition from players such as Jio and Airtel, when it initiated to regain this strategic foothold for itself.

The Comeback Strategy
Vodafone Idea’s 5G rollout is not just about connectivity—it’s a statement of intent. With a shrinking market share and financial struggles in the past, Vi is making a calculated effort to position itself as a customer-first brand. The company’s CEO, Akshaya Moondra, expressed confidence in the strategy:
We are committed to bringing world-class 5G services to India at prices that everyone can afford. Our focus is not just on providing faster internet but on creating a seamless digital ecosystem for our users.”
What’s on Offer?
Vodafone Idea has also hinted at the range of affordable plans that could attract budget-conscious customers. It is said to undercut competitors and offer high-speed data, low-latency connections, and benefits such as bundled OTT subscriptions. Industry insiders believe this aggressive pricing could help rekindle customer interest in the brand.
Besides the economy, Vi will also be emphasizing excellence in network quality. The major telecom has committed to using state-of-the-art vendors for their 5G setup, hoping that this move will make them the best the country has. First tests undertaken in some chosen cities have received a great result of download and a stable signal.
The Target Cities
It will start rolling out in key metros such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad and will then be taken to smaller cities and towns. Vi will cover 75 locations in the first phase to ensure that a varied user base is catered to-from urban tech enthusiasts to rural communities eager for high-speed connectivity.
This strategic play analysts argue, is in the effort of urban and rural market penetration balancing. “It depends on the non-metro execution for Vodafone Idea; that’s how it will turn out,” says telecom expert Rajan Mathew.
Market Challenges
The challenge though is ahead with Vi. Its aggressive push on 5G cannot be denied but the journey isn’t easy; Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel have taken a great foothold with over millions of customers already subscribed, and its own financial troubles had been public long enough to wonder if it is capable enough of such a high-scale deployment.
But the segment focus on cost and customer experiences may carve its niche, observe industry observers.
“It is definitely a do or die moment for Vodafone Idea. If the company executes well enough, it certainly can bounce back,” said Telecom Analyst Neha Sharma.
Road Ahead
As Vi prepares to roll out 5G services, customer reactions will be pivotal. With data consumption skyrocketing and India’s digital economy booming, the demand for faster and more affordable connectivity has never been higher.
Well, the latest thing Vodafone Idea has done will be more of a technological enhancement but, ultimately, an endeavour to regain India’s lost foothold in Indian telecom. Indeed, 5G is supposed to transform all that Indians use to live and work and at play, hence the stakes may not be ever higher. Vi? Only time shall tell.
