PhonePe to Launch UPI Payments for Feature Phones – Bringing Digital Payments to Non-Smartphone Users                                    

PhonePe has announced on 6th June 2025 officially, that they are going to purchase an IP, conversational engagement platform which will enable the users to make UPI-based payments from feature phones. About PhonePe

PhonePe, a leading Indian fintech company, their payment app has been launched in 2016, August. Approximately 60 crore people use PhonePe to make payment to private network and merchants easily. Around 4 crore merchants use PhonePe to run their business and keeping all payment records transparent. According to their report, this company helps the users to make transactions more than 33 crore.

What new Feature will be Unlocked by PhonePe

PhonePe is going to purchase Gupshup technology platform, GSPay advance technology, which is an application, built in feature Phones (UPI 123Pay) to NPCI’s payment solution through UPI. PhonePe is going to personalize the features of recently acquired GSPay IP and launching their own payment-based feature phones within next few months. However, the official date has not been announced yet.

It is planned by this leading fintech company, that the users will get benefits of all basic features of UPI payments, smooth P2P transfer, offline payments through QR code, and payments receiving to mobile number without any hassles.  This aim broadly to bring all users (who still now using feature phones) to the online payment ecosystem.

PhonePe benefits for Feature Phone Users

Report claims that more than 24 crore people are still using feature phones (according to 2024) and more 15 crore phones have been shipped for the new customers. PhonePe has targeted this segment because feature phone users are being neglected to use UPI features and making payments online. No other fintech companies have targeted this issue earlier, so PhonePe is going to create a new milestone through benefiting feature phone users with all basic UPI features.
